Why the Black Ice Race?

We join in with events and activities to keep fit, have fun, show solidarity, and make our point.  However, they’re all leading us up to taking on an extreme example of sensible risk management - a Siberian ultra-extreme race.

What?

A hazardous 155 mile race, on foot, from Irkutsk in Siberia to Olkon Island - half way up Lake Baikal.

We’ll be pulling all our supplies on pulks with no aids such as dogs or kites across black ice with temperatures as low as -40C and wind speeds up to 80mph.

Why?

It’s a hazardous, extreme challenge, and a World first.  We’ll have to manage the serious risks of frost bite from wind-chill temperatures of -650C, falling through thin ice, and tent fire from the stoves.

However, we want to show that with determination, ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things - and as health & safety officers ourselves, we’ll show that real health & safety enables people to do hazardous things, rather than stopping them.

Using standard health & safety risk management principles, we will manage the risks:

Þ risk awareness

Þ preparation

Þ training

Þ safeguards

Þ personal protective equipment.

We’re Health & Safety Gone Mad - a team of four environmental health officers out to show that real health & safety properly used is about saving lives, not stopping them.  It’s about enabling people to do hazardous activities, sensibly ...and not about blocking adventure and fun. To prove it we’re taking on the most terrifying race on Earth.

In our own time we’ve also been showing solidarity with the best of British - giving advice and joining in with some of our great traditional events who’s futures are often threatened - mistakenly blamed on ‘elf & safety’.
